Matt Allan: New York Mets’ Top Prospect

NEW YORK — Right-hander Matt Allan, the Mets’ top pitching prospect, will undergo Tommy John surgery in the coming weeks to repair a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament, the club announced Friday evening.

Allan, the team’s third-round pick in 2019, underwent a physical examination and MRI that revealed the tear earlier this week, the team said. Dr. David Altchek, the Mets’ medical director, confirmed the diagnosis.

Typically, pitchers need 12 to 18 months to recover and rehab after Tommy John surgery, meaning Allan will miss all of 2021 and most of — if not all of — the 2022 season. It’s unfortunate news for a 20-year-old with so much promise.

Those in the organization and around baseball have raved about Allan, who is the Mets’ No. 3 overall prospect on MLB Pipeline.

“Matt Allan is one of the more special kids in terms of maturity I’ve ever talked to,” said current Mets assistant hitting coach Kevin Howard, formerly the director of player development, in an interview during spring training. “It’s unbelievable this guy’s makeup. He acts and talks like a guy who’s already completely matured. His focus is exactly where I’d want a young pitcher’s focus to be.”

Brett Baty, others react to the news

Said Brett Baty, another top prospect and Allan’s close friend, when asked how Allan compared to big league pitchers he faced in spring training:“He’s not far off at all. He’s right there for sure. He just needs to clean up a few things but it’s definitely not that long of a road ahead for him for sure.”

Said Dave Therneau, a Stetson baseball assistant coach who organized the workouts during which Jacob deGrom began mentoring Allan: “Matt’s big league-ready. He’s close.”

Allan’s procedure is hopefully just a small bump in the road. Unfortunately, Tommy John surgery isn’t uncommon for pitchers these days. DeGrom underwent the surgeryNoah Syndergaard had the procedure last spring and isn’t scheduled to return until June. And because Allan is so young, this doesn’t mark the end of his career and it doesn’t mean he’ll never be the same.

Matt Allan was excited for 2021 season

A week and a day before this unfortunate news broke, Allan spent some time on Zoom discussing his excitement for 2021, which would have been his first full season in professional baseball (the pandemic eliminated 2020). Two years ago, he left high school with a terrific fastball and curveball. Last year, he added and refined a changeup.

He now has three pitches and, because he didn’t feel any one of them lagged behind another, he made it a goal to improve all of them this season. He was ready to pitch against other uniforms, and was scheduled to begin the year at High-A Brooklyn.

“I think I had the most nerves going into big-league camp and I think being there and being around the guys and being around a lot of the veterans, I think it really calmed me down,” Allan said that day. “Now being in minor-league camp, I think I really feel dominant. I think facing some of the big leaguers and 40-man guys — generally older guys — to facing my level, High-A guys, Double-A guys, I think honestly I just feel pretty dominant and I’m looking to take that into the season.”

Baty and Allan, who are part of the same draft class, have faced one another dozens of times. It’s a tough battle for both of them.

Matt Allan’s high heater, maturity stand out

Asked about the toughest part of facing Allan, Baty recently said: “Probably just his heater up in the zone because it plays. It plays like 102. It’s a 98 up in the zone, plays like 102. And then he’s also got the dirty changeup to get me out low and away. He’s just a tough pitcher in general.”

His stuff might be close to big league-ready, though the Mets almost certainly wouldn’t have needed him this season.

His maturity — both on and off the mound — also impresses those who have met him.

“Everything is directed toward being a great baseball player, both on and off the field, in being a good teammate, in his routines and working hard,” Howard said in a February interview. “It’s not just about competing in the game, and it’s really hard to get guys bought into that when they’re young. It’s an unbelievable advantage for us that he’s already so far down the road in his maturity.”

Mets’ Noah Syndergaard To Have Tommy John Surgery For Torn UCL

New York Mets right-hander Noah Syndergaard has a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow and will undergo Tommy John surgery this week, the team announced Tuesday.

Dr. David Altchek will perform the surgery Thursday at the Hospital for Special Surgery, according to the Mets.

“After experiencing discomfort in his elbow before spring training was suspended due to the pandemic, Noah and our health and performance department have been in constant contact,” Mets general manager Brodie Van Wagenen said in a statement. “Based on the persistence of his symptoms, Noah underwent a physical examination and MRI that revealed the ligament tear. A second opinion from Dr. Neal ElAttrache confirmed the diagnosis and the recommendation for surgery.

“Noah is an incredibly hard worker and a tremendous talent. While this is unfortunate, we have no doubt that Noah will be able to return to full strength and continue to be an integral part of our championship pursuits in the future.”

Syndergaard, 27, who is one of the hardest-throwing starting pitchers in baseball history and has among the best arsenal of pitches in the game, was expected to anchor the Mets’ rotation alongside ace Jacob deGrom.

Syndergaard threw a career-high 197⅔ innings last season, and while his ERA was a career-worst 4.28, the combination of good health and stuff foretold good things.

The health end did not hold up, and Syndergaard will be sidelined until April 2021 at the earliest — and more likely until the early summer. He is the second high-profile pitcher to need Tommy John surgery in recent days, with Boston Red Sox ace Chris Sale also confirming he would undergo the elbow reconstruction surgery.

Syndergaard, acquired by the Mets in 2012 when they traded Cy Young winner R.A. Dickey to Toronto, was an instant phenom. His fastball consistently hit 100 mph, he ripped off sliders as fast as 93 mph, and he struck out 166 batters in 150 innings as a 22-year-old rookie in 2015. His best year came in 2016, when he was an All-Star and posted a 2.60 ERA in 183⅔ innings.

Injuries wiped out most of Syndergaard’s 2017 season and shortened his 2018. He planned to join deGrom and Marcus Stroman atop the Mets’ rotation, with Steven MatzRick Porcello and Michael Wacha filling out the last two spots.

With baseball sidelined until at least May because of the coronavirus outbreak, the Mets now won’t have to choose among the final three for a rotation spot. Their prospects for 2020, which were bright during a strong spring, got that much more difficult in a National League East with the defending World Series champion Washington Nationals, defending division winner Atlanta Braves and a Philadelphia Phillies team with playoff aspirations.

Yankees’ Luis Severino to Undergo Tommy John Surgery

New York Yankees pitcher Luis Severino will have Tommy John surgery after dealing with forearm soreness last week, general manager Brian Cashman announced Tuesday.

Cashman said two doctors confirmed Severino should have the surgery, and the right-hander agreed to have the operation as soon as possible. The procedure will be performed by Dr. David Altchek at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, per the Yankees.

“After much consideration, as well as consultation with the Yankees organization, my family, and my representatives, I have elected to adhere to the advice of the medical professionals and undergo surgery to repair my injured elbow,” Severino said. “I am extremely disappointed that I will not be able to put on a Yankees uniform and compete with my teammates this year, but I promise that I will be working tirelessly during this process to come back stronger than ever to make the greatest fans in baseball proud.”

New York sent Severino to have a battery of tests after he started experiencing forearm soreness again last week. Severino flew to New York on Sunday to start three days of tests at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital. Despite his arm appearing healthy this offseason, he started feeling the soreness again while throwing changeups at spring training.

Severino missed five months last season due to an issue with an inflamed rotator cuff. He later dealt with a lat injury while rehabbing his rotator cuff. The 26-year-old returned last season for three games in September before starting twice against the Astros in the American League Championship Series.

Surgery to repair the torn anterior cruciate ligament in Mariano Rivera’s right knee Tuesday “went perfectly” according to the all-time saves leader. Joe Girardi wasn’t told how long the rehab would take, but the manager anticipates having Rivera as his closer in 2013.

“I think we’re all expecting to see Mo pitch next year,” Girardi said Tuesday afternoon. “I really don’t think we’re going to see anything this year.”

Following Tuesday’s surgery by Mets physician David Altchek at New York’s Hospital for Special Surgery, Rivera took to Twitter to update his fans.

“My surgery was a success, it went perfectly,” Rivera tweeted. “I am looking forward to beginning my rehab soon. Thanks as always for your prayers.”

According to the Yankees, the isolated repair of Rivera’s ACL went as planned. There was no issue with the meniscus, which Girardi viewed as “good news.”

Rivera injured his knee May 3 at Kansas City while pursuing a fly ball in batting practice. Prior to surgery, Rivera had to strengthen the knee and take medication to dissolve a blood clot in his right calf.
